Gaylen Francis Noldner, son of John and Beryl (Newsam) Noldner, was born in Pierre, SD on October 16, 1943. He was baptized and was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church north of Murdo, SD.
Gaylen married his high school sweetheart, Mary Tornow, on February 27, 1961. After graduating from Murdo High School in 1961, he worked on the family farm for a year and then the Clarence Noldner farm for two years. They then moved to town where he worked at the John Deere Implement for 7 years and Corky’s Auto Supply for 18 years. In 1988, they moved to Mitchell where Gaylen worked for 15 years at Trail King. He retired in April 2004.
All who knew Gaylen remember him as being a very special friend. His greatest joy was spending time talking to friends and family. He loved visiting with his grandchildren and was so proud of all of them. He was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild. During his battle with cancer, Gaylen gave his life to the Lord. His daily phone conversations became his outreach to others, and a comfort and blessing to him.
Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife of 50 years, Mary, Mitchell; children: Tami (Scott) Holbeck of Armour; Tracy (Terri) Noldner of Sioux Falls; Toby (Jenny) Noldner of Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Michael (Christi), Craig, Michelle, Collin, Austin, Whitney, Sam, and Jason; his sister, Belva (Dale) Sassman, Rapid City; mother-in-law, Alice Tornow, Chattanooga, TN; sisters-in-law Marlys Tornow, Cheyenne, WY and Joyce (Don) Dick, Chattanooga, TN; brother-in-law Larry (Susan) Tornow, Leesberg, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Beryl, father-in-law Frank Tornow, and brother-in-law Laverne Tornow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gaylen's name to the Mitchell American Cancer Society and the Mitchell Heart and Sole Cancer Walk.

Mary, Tami, Tracy, Toby , and families –
My heart and prayers are with you all. May God continue to surround you with his love and comfort. Gaylen had a special gift for conversation and building relationships. He was truly interested in other people and could share anecdotes and stories that uplifted and cheered. My special memories include our tripto Dollywood with Grandma T, going to Disneyworld, his dill pickle treats, and his hospitality. His courage and determination during his illness have been an inspiration – a message to all of us. He had learned what was most important in life - enjoying his family and friends and living fully each day.

We're glad we had him as son-in-law/uncle for as long as we did. He was a blessing in our lives and will hold a special place in our hearts. We were so comforted to hear that he had committed his life to Christ. Now we know we will see him again.

So sorry to hear the news about Gaylen. There are so many fond memories of when we were kids growing up and all the good times we had with Gaylen, Bernie, Dennis, and Rodney, especially in the winter with the old homemade toboggan. It was a special time. May all the memories of the good times comfort all of you at this time.

Mary and family, we are so sorry for your loss. I remember when Gaylen started at Trail King, him and I hit it off really well, he was kindof a father figure to me while he was at Trail King, since my dad had passed away 4 years earlier. He was very proud of his family, he talked about you guys all the time. He will always have a special place in my heart.

Gaylen was a good cousin, and I was so happy to reconnect with him and Mary during these last few years and to meet Tracy who used to beat me and his grandmother, Alice in every game we ever played with him.
He was very courageous during his illness which will be a great legacy for all his family.
All my love and prayers.

Words alone cannot express how appreciative I was to be a part of Gaylen's life, especially the last 2-3 years. The phone calls back and forth created lots of laughs and memories. I will miss our conversations. I know the pain you must feel with his loss, but he's done suffering now. God Bless you.
